Humane Society’s claims are hard to back up

PigsDuring a recent work session of the Senate ag committee, we heard the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) make claims about the treatment of animals in Washington farms. They claimed sows in gestation crates are being prevented from free movement to the point that they were rubbing their skin raw in places where the crate pressed against the animal. Then they showed pictures from an old veal barn which had animals kept in tiny stalls preventing the animal from even turning around.

As it turns out, the pictures and examples being cited by the HSUS representatives were not from Washington, nor were they from anywhere near our state. The pictures we were shown came from the east coast. We asked them how many commercial veal operations existed in Washington state and they admitted that they did not know.
